Not just for kids. A powerful tool for aerial inspection and real estate work.
The Altitaco drone is a small (14″), lightweight quadcopter with game-style joystick controller supplied with two 1500 mAh Li-Ion batteries, four spare blades and a hard, cloth-bound zippered case. Flight time on one battery charge is specified as 13 minutes maximum, but I found this may be optimistic when flying in a stiff breeze while video recording. The manual says the LED on the charge controller turns from red to green when charging is complete, but in my case, it turned from red to off (no green).A smart phone with a fairly bright screen is required to get full use of the video/snapshot features of the drone, although no phone is needed for basic flight practice. The controller is much easier to handle without the phone, so unless you’re already an experience pilot, I suggest practicing basic flight without the phone initially. I needed about an hour of flight time to start getting comfortable with the controls, as some muscle memory needs to be developed to safely handle all but the most basic flight operations. Fortunately, the Altitaco drone is light and rugged enough to survive the inevitable crashes while learning to fly.To use the smartphone with the drone, the Bokigibi app must be installed and a wifi link established. With no phone connection to the Internet, a message appears (see Photo), but the app works fine. As the Bokigibi app is from prolific drone software supplier Zheng Xiang, a Chinese provider, it is required under the CCP cybersecurity law to provide all customer data to the government upon request and without notification. As I do not wish to share personal information with a foreign government, I use a dedicated, mostly empty smartphone without a SIM card installed, an isolated wifi sub-LAN, and avoid providing personal information, although the app requires access to location and some phone content for video/photo storage. Be careful if you’re concerned about data privacy.Although controller operation is straightforward, the large number of controls requires some preliminary study before first flight. The manual and cardboard controller overlay are helpful, but because the way the control information is presented is very compact, new users (such as myself) need time, and perhaps a few crashes, to get a feel for the controls. The second Photo is a view from a second phone showing the controller and drone camera image from behind the drone in flight. Notice that the image brightness may be a problem in direct sunlight.Overall, the Altitaco drone seems to be an ideal training tool for drone operation, and I look forward to (at least) several more flying hours to become a proficient drone pilot.

Poor quality
My son received this drone for Christmas and was very pleased at first. It was a quick learning curve since this was his first drone. The remote isn’t overwhelming with too many controls. The drone came with two batteries and blade replacements. Only one of the batteries worked well, but its longevity was only about ten minutes. The drone never worked correctly with the other battery even when it was fully charged. After about three weeks, the remote power button became stuck and won’t turn on, so we can’t use the drone any longer. Despite it being one of the less expensive drones, I still wouldn’t waste your money because it won’t work for long.
